Lightweight rail tractor unit for bi-directional high speed operation in conjunction with special road trailer units able to be mounted on rail bogies. The intermodal transfer operation will be achieved without recourse to terminal transfer cranes. The train formation will operate with either a pair of rail tractor units or with a single unit and a reduced number of trailers. In this mode of operation a special bogie mounted driving (unpowered) cab unit will ensure bi-directional capability.
