The provision of free, independent and confidential advocacy, assisting patients and their carers to make a complaint about the national health service treatment or care they have received; assisting traditionally excluded members of the community, for example people with mental illness, the elderly or those with English as a second language, in order to help them to use and understand the complaints procedures concerning health services, including writing letters and/or attending meetings on behalf of patients or carers who lack the capacity to carry out these actions unaided or for themselves.
